The Family Quest

Vancouver, Canada

Explore the region

This past week, Nightline on ABC, had a very interesting and sobering piece about how large cities around the world are bristling at the increase in tourists. Some citizens are even protesting because government funds are being allocated to tourism rather than to the wellbeing of the citizenry. However, Japan is promoting to go out from the large cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, and discover the smaller, quieter, and serene outskirts. There are fewer crowds and you might find things that are more memorable and enjoyable than if you stayed in the large metropolis.

When my family went to Dublin, we spent a large portion of our time in the city center, however, one of the highlights of the trip was when we took a day and hopped aboard a train to Greystones, an hour south. We had a wonderful day walking the streets of this quaint, Irish coastal town and both of my daughters said that this day was one of the best on the trip. Check out the surrounding region, you’ll be happy that you did.

City Spotlight: Vancouver, Canada

A city where soaring mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, where lush rainforests are just minutes from a bustling downtown, Vancouver is full of natural beauty, culture, and options for families to discover. You won’t find a more beautiful coastal city that offers breathtaking vistas wherever you turn. Let’s break Vancouver down using the tried and true 5 W’s in helping families decide if this is the next vacation destination.

Who should go to Vancouver?

If your family loves the great outdoors and spending time biking, hiking, and exploring nature, this is a perfect city for you. However, if your family also likes vibrant markets, diverse culinary scenes, and fascinating museums, Vancouver can also be a great location for your next adventure.

When should we go?

Summer offers the most reliable sunny and warm weather, ideal for taking full advantage of the parks, beaches, and water activities. Spring and Autumn are also beautiful times to visit with fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures for exploring. While winter is known for its rain (Vancouver's "liquid sunshine"), it's also the perfect time for nearby skiing and enjoying the city's cozy, festive atmosphere.

What should we do?

Vancouver has so much to offer. Here are just a few ideas with links to their websites for more information.

  • Stanley Park: One of the world's great urban parks, you can rent bikes to cycle the iconic Seawall, visit the incredible Vancouver Aquarium, or marvel at the towering First Nations totem poles at Brockton Point.

  • Granville Island: Hop on a tiny Aquabus and ride over to this bustling hub. Explore the famous Public Market for endless foodie treats, catch a street performance, and be sure to visit the Kids Market, a two-story building dedicated entirely to children's toys, games, and fun.

  • Capilano Suspension Bridge Park: For a family thrill, walk across the 450-foot-long bridge as it sways 230 feet above the Capilano River. The park also includes a Treetops Adventure among ancient Douglas firs and a breathtaking Cliffwalk along a granite precipice.

  • Grouse Mountain: Dubbed "The Peak of Vancouver," a scenic Skyride gondola will take you to the top. In summer, you can visit the resident grizzly bear sanctuary, while winter offers skiing, snowshoeing, and a magical Light Walk. The views of the city are spectacular year-round.

Where should we eat?

Where to start is the question. You can’t find a bad meal in Vancouver, but here are a few of my favorites when I visit.

  • Granville Island Public Market: A feast for the senses, this is less a single restaurant and more a collection of amazing food experiences. From Lee's Donuts (a local legend) to fresh salmon, delicious pies, and artisanal sandwiches, there's something for every member of the family.

  • Japadog: A true Vancouver original, this is not your average hot dog stand. With unique Japanese-inspired toppings like teriyaki sauce, seaweed, and fried noodles, it’s a fun, affordable, and unforgettable street food experience.

  • White Spot: A British Columbia institution, this is the quintessential family restaurant. They are famous for their burgers and the legendary "Pirate Pak" for kids, a full meal served in a fun, collectible cardboard boat.

  • Earnest Ice Cream: After a long day of sightseeing, treat the family to some of the best ice cream in the city. Known for its creative, small-batch flavors served in returnable glass jars, it's a sweet stop that everyone will love.

Why Vancouver?

The question should be why not? Vancouver is a spectacular city that offers an unparalleled mix of urban excitement and natural wonder. From kayaking in False Creek to exploring the hands-on exhibits at Science World to simply enjoying a sunset at the beach, a family can experience a number of memorable experiences in Vancouver, Canada.
