City Spotlight: Charleston, SC

The city that has seen the start of the Civil War, the city that was a major port in Colonial America, Charleston is full of history, culture, and options for families to discover. Let’s break Charleston down using the tried and true 5 W’s in helping families decide if this is the next vacation destination.

Who should go to Charleston?

If your family loves history and spending time walking and taking historical tours, this is a great city for you. However, if your family also likes beaches and shopping, Charleston can also be a great location for your next adventure.

When should we go?

Summer can be very hot and humid in South Carolina. Spring, Autumn, and even during the holiday season are times when Charleston can be at its very best. The beaches may not be a great option during the holidays, but the city puts on a wonderful festive feel that families can enjoy during that time.

What should we do?

Charleston has so much to offer. Here are just a few ideas with links to their websites for more information.

  • USS Yorktown and USS Laffey: You can tour the iconic aircraft carrier and the “Battleship that wouldn’t die” and gain an appreciation for those who served on these ships.

  • Charleston Tea Garden: Less than an hour south of Charleston is the only commercial tea farm in the United States. With plants that are ancestors from the original roots planted in the 1600’s, the Tea Garden is an underrated highlight.

  • Historical Walking Tour: There are so many options for historical walking tours. If walking is not what you want to do, several companies also have horse drawn carriage historical rides through town.

  • South Carolina Aquarium: The South Carolina Aquarium sits perfectly on the shores of Charleston and has some of the most interactive exhibits for kids of all ages. A well thought out aquarium, this is definitely worth your time.

Where should we eat?

Where to start is the question. You can’t find a bad meal in Charleston, but here are a few of my favorites when I visit.

  • Millers All Day: From cinnamon rolls the size of your head to amazing egg specialties, Millers has something for everyone and you’re guaranteed to leave satisfied and with a smile on your face.

  • Vicious Biscuits: Charleston is known for it’s biscuits and Vicious Biscuits are by far one of the best. There are a few different locations in the Charleston area and there are no limit of tasty biscuit options.

  • The Obstinate Daughter: Found on Sullivan’s Island just north of Charleston, the Obstinate Daughter is a cool, chic dining location with a gnocchi dish that melts in your mouth.

Why Charleston?

The question should be why not? Charleston is a great southern city that offers so many options for families. From visiting the USS Yorktown to taking a boat out to Fort Sumter to spending a day at the beach, a family can experience a number of memorable experiences in Charleston, South Carolina.

Travel Hacks

Looking for a helpful “hack” to make traveling even easier and enjoyable? Try these next time you travel.

  1. When going through security lines, try to go to the one furthest to the left. Because most of society is right handed, the lines on the left side are usually less congested.

  2. The best time to visit a historical site or landmark is either super early, near closing, or at lunch when everyone is eating.
